The Pew Charitable Trusts has some interesting interactive charts on the distribution of federal itemized deductions and tax credits claimed by taxpayers in each state. The “per-claimant average” tab shows the average deductions and credits claimed by each taxpayer claiming a credit or deduction. The “per-filer average” is the credits and deductions claimed in the state divided by all taxpayers who filed a return, regardless of whether they claimed a credit or itemized deduction.
In total, NC is right around the average plus or minus a little. There are wider variations from the average if you look at specific deductions such as real estate taxes.
